Project ‘Garages’
The 'Garage reconstruction project' is the proper use of existing resources. This resource belongs to the people who are in a difficult economic situation. Even managing a small resource properly can help small businesses start or grow. Sustainable economy approach is in some ways a pilot project of the other existing unused resources that the country and its population have.
In the late 90th the stealing was a real issue in Tbilisi. The idea of making small buildings in the middle of the public space came from the necessity of protection cars from the thieves. The City was in a very difficult situation, there was hunger and civil war, the only thing that was left for people was private properties. It also became clear that some area around the living blocks were also the private property of the inhabitants. No one was thinking about design or some kind of system, or even the outcome that we face now in the public space of the city Tbilisi. Usually, construction was chaotic or even aggressive to own the land in the yard to build up the garage.
There are a lot of existing businesses in the garage however this is somewhat of a low stakes business. Their visual appearance does not match the already distorted appearance of the city, which is due to the lack of a general plan of the city and chaotic construction. Small things matter' Here we can understand the literal meaning and consider the 'bottom up' strategy important, because population-friendly development that is conceived and considered in the system will create a new chain of economics, increase the profitability of small businesses and enable people to implement new ideas.
